This is an interesting article I came across today in Cool Hunting.  Reclaimed wood from industrial origins is used to create wonderful modern furniture.  The story is by Victor Reznik.

Antique Tips from Pottery Barn

Not everyone is going to be able to have a decorating budget for antiques and vintage furniture.  Stores like Pottery Barn do a great job on providing 'antique style' pieces for the home.  Also, there are antiques that you can buy, for example, bowls and crated beer bottles that bear individual marks of use and history.

I came across this video on YouTube submitted by Pottery Barn.  It is pretty interesting to hear from Stacy Borocz. Take a look.

Vintage Fleet

Lufthansa Retrobird A321

Feeling nostalgic?  I caught a photo of this Lufthansa A321 last October as it was taxiing to the runway.  The funny thing is that this A321 isn't vintage at all.  Maybe Delta should paint a few of their 1960's DC-9's with a retro livery.

Hey! Your Tail Light Is Out.

1965 Mercury Monterey 4-door Breezeway Sedan
Close-up of Broken Tail Light

From Junk to Treasure.  I love junk yards.  These shots of a vintage Mercury were taken in the Southwest.   Similar vintage car above, was refurbished in 2007.

Chandelier Restoration

I thought this video about the restoration of the Palmer House in Chicago was very interesting.  I was one of the team members that coordinated this amazing restoration project for the Grand Ballroom.  All 23 beautiful antique chandeliers were refurbished by Lumenelle.  Take a look.

Time-Honored Treasures

Royal Livingstone Hotel, Zambia

I just recently stayed at the Royal Livingstone Hotel in Zambia.  It's an amazing place and is quite elegant.  The furniture and accessories are said to be inspired by time-honored treasures of African colonial style.  As you can see, the photo was taken during the Christmas Holiday.

Future Post Regarding Faux Vintage Techniques

Korean Pottery, Seoul

Seeking vintage furniture without buying vintage furniture? Not every consumer is an antique collector.  I would like to touch on faux vintage techniques such as distressing, antiquing, and glazing. Also, I would include distressing the wood with a hammer, nails, sandpaper, whatever you want.

This topic will appear in a future posting.

What Are You Looking at?

Wild Horses, Easter Island

It looks old, but what is it? Are you looking at used furniture, vintage furniture, or antiques?  One way to break it down is by classifying furniture by fabrication date:

over 100 years old: antique
from 1910 to 1979: vintage furniture (including mid century modern furniture)
recently fabricated (but looks vintage):  'retro style' or 'reproduction'

Anything else might just be considered 'used'.

You can find vintage furniture at antique stores,  e-bay, Craig's List and estate sales. Reproduction furniture can be found at stores like Room & Board and Design Within Reach.  Time-honored 'retro style' furniture inspired by vintage furniture can be found at stores such as Pottery Barn.
